In traditional stair construction it is not unusual to draw the ground plan of the staircase on a scale of 1 to 1 on a slab. For complicated installation situations with irregular walls, templates made of cardboard or fibreboard can be made for the individual steps on site. The outline of each step is then transferred using the outline or template. The contour of the stringers is constructed directly on the glued board on the basis of the steps.
After the contour has been drawn, the component is now sawn out. A sliding table saw is best suited for components with straight edges. For curved edges a joiner's band saw can be used; a problem here is the guidance of the large and heavy parts on the small machine table. The stringers in particular are therefore often sawn out with a jigsaw. Due to the thickness of the boards and the hardness of the wood, only top class jigsaws can be considered.
