Production process of solid parquet

Solid parquet is the oldest and highest quality variant of wooden floor coverings. High-priced gradings of noble hardwoods are used, for example oak, beech, maple, walnut or various tropical species. Especially the solid floorboards are also quite thick. During installation, different visual effects can be achieved through the laying pattern. Solid parquet looks noble and feels pleasant to the touch. It is also very durable, as it can be sanded again on site several times when worn. A disadvantage is the high material price and the elaborate processing.

Solid floorboard

Solid floorboards or planks are a particularly high-quality product. Each plank is made from a single solid board. Typical dimensions are at least 12cm wide and 1.2m long. The production process of solid floorboards varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Preparation
Trimming
If the planks still have a wane, this is removed (sawn off).

Pre-Planing
The upper and lower sides of the planks are pre-planed so that wood defects are more prominent and visible.

Cutting out defects
Wood defects such as knots, cracks or discoloration are cut out according to the quality requirements.

Visual inspection
In most cases, a trained employee selects the better side of the board as the visible side.
Patch up
The patching or filling of defects is usually done by hand. The filled areas are often damaged during subsequent planing and must therefore be repaired.
Interim storage
Solid floorboards are susceptible to changes in shape due to moisture absorption or release. They are therefore stored in a controlled room climate.
Planing and profiling
Planing
Depending on the nature of the material to be processed and the quality of the pre-planing, planing is repeated at this point in the process.

Filling
If new defects are created during planing, they are filled again manually.
Putty Sanding
After filling, protruding filler (also called "putty") residues are removed by a sanding process.

Profiling
The planks receive their profile on all sides. This step can also include a chamfer or relief grooves, if desired.

Surface finishing and packaging
Brushing the planks
If a rough, rustic surface is desired, the planks are treated with a brushing machine.

Sanding
In order to achieve an optimal surface when varnishing, the wood surface must be very even. It is therefore sanded using wide belt sanding machines or profile sanding machines.

Surface coating
The surface coating is applied in several passes, each consisting of application, drying and intermediate sanding. Coating agents are varnish, oil or wax.

Final inspection
The surface treatment is always followed by a final quality control.
Packaging
A high quality product such as a floor element, especially if it is finished surface treated, requires secure packaging.

The blocks/bars are 16 mm to 22 mm thick. The lam parquet, which is produced in a very similar way, has no profile and is only about 10 mm thick. The herringbone bond and the ship floor bond are common laying patterns.

Defining the good side
The blanks are examined and the better side is selected as the visible side ("good side"). All blanks are first placed with the good side on top of the belt. The assessment and, if necessary, the turning over is done by hand by an experienced employee.
Profiling
The planks receive their profile on all sides. This step can also include a chamfer or relief grooves, if desired.

Sorting and packaging
Sorting
The visual quality sorting of the parquet friezes is done by employees by hand or, less frequently, by machine using optoelectronic systems.

Mosaic parquet usually has a thickness of 8 mm (maximum 10 mm). The upright lamella parquet (industrial parquet) is made of the same lamellas, but they are glued upright (usually 22 mm high).

Sorting
The visual quality sorting of the lamellas is carried out by employees manually or mechanically with the aid of optoelectronic systems.

The lamellas are laid to the desired pattern and fixed mechanically either with wire or net on the underside.
