Production process

Flooring

Wooden floor coverings are made of solid wood or wood-based materials or a combination of both. We distinguish between:

Solid parquet, or also one-layer parquet: The flooring is made out of one layer of solid wood. Hard and robust kinds of wood are used for this, so mainly deciduous wood.

Multi-layer parquet, or pre-fab parquet: The surface consists of a several mm thick layer of hard solid wood, but the rest of the board structure is made of one or several other materials (two-layer or three-layer parquet).

Laminate flooring is made of a support panel of wood composite (usually HDF or MDF), that has been coated with a decorative surface of resin-soaked papers or lacquer.

Parquet is a flooring that is made up of a stronger layer of solid hardwood, or a top layer of hardwood that has been put on one or several further supporting layers.

Laminate flooring consists of a support panel of wood fibre board (HDF or MDF) and a surface of glued paper layers.

Variants

Two-layer parquet is the technically less demanding variant of multi-layer parquet. While the top layer consists of solid hardwood, plywood is used for the base layer. Two-layer parquet is slightly thinner and more flexible then three-layer parquet.

    trimming

    The raw friezes are cut to length (trimmed) with a crosscut saw or a double-end profiler.

    Four-sided planing

    All four sides of the raw friezes are planed.

    Crosscutting

    Both ends are cut at right angles so that the frieze is precisely given the desired length.

    Ripping

    The raw friezes are cut (ripped) into 3 mm to 6 mm thick lamellas.

    Pre-Sanding

    The lamellas are roughly pre-sanded before sorting in order to remove possible burning marks from the sawing.

    Sorting

    The lamellas are classified into quality levels and, if necessary, additionally sorted according to their length.

    Calibrating

    The surface layer is calibrated, i.e. brought to a constant thickness through a grinding process.

  • Producing the middle layer

    Dividing

    The supporting panel of two-layer parquet usually consists of a seven-layer plywood board. The raw panel is first divided crosswise and lengthwise into strips of suitable size.

  • Pressing

    Infeed

    The two layers - the top layer lamellas and the support panel divided into strips - are fed into the pressing process. This can be done manually or mechanically.

    Glue Application

    An application system applies the glue evenly onto the bonding surface.

    Pressing

    The top layer and support panel are pressed together in a cycle press.

    Grooving

    After pressing, the parquet planks are usually grooved from below crosswise to the top lamella (possibly lengthwise as well). If two-layer parquet is glued to the subfloor during laying, the grooves provide more flexibility.

  • Finishing

    Calibrating

    After pressing, the entire plank is precisely sanded to a uniform thickness (calibrated).

    Filling

    Pores and unevenness in the wood are filled with a filler. After a drying time, excess filler is sanded off.

    Wood Sanding

    The wood surface is sanded with a fine grain. The process is also known as fine sanding or wood sanding.

    lacquering

    Lacquering is carried out in several passes (both primers and topcoats) with intermediate drying and sanding cycles.

    Drying

    Drying takes place in a through-feed dryer.

    Intermediate Lacquer Sanding

    After priming, a sanding process (intermediate sanding) is necessary before each further application of lacquer.

  • Profiling

    Longitudinal profiling

    First the longitudinal profile is milled. For this it is possible to add a chamfer. When profiling is performed after the surface has been treated, the chamfer must be post-varnished in the double end tenoner (DEP).

    By applying hydrophobe agents to the profiled edges it is possible to increase the quality.

    Transverse profiling

    After longitudinal profiling the transverse profile is milled.

    Final check

    The final check is usually performed visually by experienced employees. 

  • Packaging

    Stacking

    Often treated surfaces are laid on top of one another.

    Packaging

    A high quality product, such as multi-layer parquet flooring which has a sensitive surface, will always receive safe packaging. Often cardboard packages, shrink film, or straps are used.

    Palleting

    Parcels are stacked ready for shipping on a pallet and fixed using film or straps
