Production of multilayer parquet or also engineered flooring

Multi-layer parquet is often also called engineered parquet flooring or two-ply respectively three-ply flooring. The surface or wear layer consists of hard solid wood and is several millimetres thick. Underneath is a carrier plate made of one or more other materials (two-layer or three-layer parquet). Multi-layer parquet is already surface-treated, so that the parquet floor can usually be walked on immediately after laying. Multi-layer parquet is produced with a tongue and groove joint or also with a click system.

Variants

Two-layer parquet

Two-layer parquet or two-ply parquet is the technically less demanding variant of multi-layer parquet. The top layer consists of hardwood, while plywood is often used for the base layer (a mat of strips can also be used as the base layer, similar to three-layer parquet). Two-layer parquet is slightly thinner and more flexible than three-layer parquet. The top layer usually consists of a continuous piece of solid wood; only in rare cases is it composed of several lamellas. The elements are between 0.4 and 1.2 m long. Typical laying patterns are ship's floor bond or, in the case of smaller elements, herringbone pattern.

Planing
All four sides of the blanks are planed. The sides are therefore flat, the cross-section is perfectly rectangular and the width and thickness are uniform.

Cross-cutting
With a double crosscut saw or double end tenoner, both end faces are cut off at right angles at a defined distance. The blank now already has the length of the top layer lamellas.

splitting
The blanks are cut or split into lamellas 3 mm to 6 mm thick

pre-sanding
Depending on the type of wood and the quality of the splitting process, it may be necessary to remove burn marks from the lamellas resulting from the sawing process before sorting.

Sorting
The lamellas are divided into quality grades and, if necessary, additionally sorted according to their length.

Calibrating
In case of wide lamellas or if a hard substrate is used, e.g. plywood or HDF, it may be necessary to calibrate the top layer before pressing.

Production of carrier layer
Dividing raw panel
The base or carrier layer of two-layer parquet usually consists of a seven-layer plywood board. The raw board is first divided crosswise and lengthwise into strips of suitable size.

Pressing
Infeed
The two layers - top layer lamellas and the carrier plate divided into strips - are fed to the pressing process. This can be done manually or mechanically.

Two-layer parquet: adhesive application
An application system applies the adhesive evenly to the bonding surface.

Pressing
Top layer and carrier board or core layer are pressed together in a cycle press.

Cross crooving
After pressing, the parquet planks are usually grooved from below crosswise(possibly additionally lengthwise). If two-layer parquet is glued flat to the subfloor during installation, the grooves provide more flexibility.

Surface treatment
Calibrating
After pressing, the plate is sanded (calibrated) to a uniform thickness.

Filling
Pores and unevenness in the wood are filled with a filler (putty). Filler that is applied too much is sanded off after a drying time.

Fine sanding
To achieve a perfect surface when varnishing, the wood surface must first be sanded with fine grain, called fine or finish sanding.

Surface coating
The surface coating is applied in several passes, each consisting of application, drying and intermediate sanding. Coating agents are varnish, oil or wax.

Intermediate varnish sanding
After each varnish application the surface has fine unevenness. In addition, a second layer of varnish adheres poorly to the smooth surface of the first layer. Therefore, after priming and before each further varnish application, a sanding process (intermediate sanding) is necessary.

Profiling
Profiling
Profiling is done in powerful double-end tenoners. In the case of click profiles, some elements may be extruded into the profile. Chamfers can be milled.

Final inspection
